The Ocean County prosecutor says a 19-year-old has been charged with aggravated arson and arson in connection with a wildfire that started in Waretown on April 22.
Investigators have identified the suspect as Joseph Kling.
The fire continued spreading through the southern Ocean County area and crews are continuing to work to get flames under control.
There are still about a dozen structures that are threatened, but there are no evacuations.
Fire officials say that more than 13,250 acres burned and that the fire is 50% contained.
"The cause of the fire was determined to be incendiary by an improperly extinguished bonfire. Further investigation has revealed that Kling was the individual responsible for setting wooden pallets on fire - and then leaving the area without the fire being fully extinguished. Kling was taken into custody at Ocean Township (Waretown) Police Headquarters; he was thereafter transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he is presently lodged pending a detention hearing," according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
Officials say they expect that acreage number to grow before reaching full containment, which may not be until over the weekend when rain is expected to arrive.
"This time last year we were at 310 wildfires for a total of 315 acres burned," said Bill Donnelly of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. "This year the same period, we're at 662 wildfires with 16,572 acres burned."
"This could very well end up being the largest wildfire in New Jersey in 20 years," said Commissioner of NJ Environmental Protection Shawn LaTourette.
