Baychester Avenue is often a traffic nightmare, with competition for every inch of the roadway.
Cars, school buses and MTA buses all try to navigate the congested roadway along Baychester Avenue.
The situation is made worse by six schools located along a half-mile stretch.
Ronald Hartridge, a Co-op City resident, says the problem is especially bad during school arrival and dismissal times.
“Anybody that double or triple parked in these areas, that could make for a bad time,” Ronald Hartridge, Co-op City resident.
At dismissal time, parents were seen double parking to pick up their children, causing further slowdowns in traffic.
The Department of Transportation has a plan to address the issue.
“It should help to move the traffic smoother, since there’s going to be less of an impact of congestion,” said Hartridge.
The proposal calls for one lane of traffic in each direction, a school loading zone on the side with the schools and two parking lanes on the side of the Thruway.
Currently, there’s a “No Standing on School Days” sign posted, but drivers still park there.
Under the new plan, parking would not be allowed in the loading zone, and with only one lane of traffic, double parking would no longer be possible.
“Now you see the signs, now that you see that there’s no space — so you literally have to stop, drop and go,” said Hartridge.
Hartridge says the corridor is also difficult for students to cross, even with a crossing guard present.
According to the DOT, there have been 24 pedestrian injuries on Baychester Avenue in the past five years. With the proposed shortened crossing distance, that number is expected to go down.
The DOT says these are proposed changes, along with plans to extend the sidewalk next to the thruway and widen the median, all in an effort to improve safety.
