A battery storage fire in Warwick that began Friday remains an ongoing concern, even as flames and heavy smoke have subsided.
Emergency crews continued working Sunday to manage the unique challenges posed by lithium-ion battery fires at an industrial facility on Church Street.
Officials say
the fire started after water infiltrated the battery system — the same issue blamed for a similar fire at the site in 2023. While the building reopened Sunday, one energy storage unit continues to burn internally, preventing firefighters from fully extinguishing it. Crews are monitoring conditions and keeping a safety perimeter in place.
Business owners nearby say they are worried about health risks but feel unable to shut down operations.
The facility is operated by Convergent Energy and Power, which previously assured the community such an incident would not happen again.
Orange County HAZMAT conducted environmental testing over the weekend and says residents are safe, though results have not yet been released. Officials stress the situation remains contained, but unresolved.
