The holiday season can be a challenging time for those affected by domestic violence, with added stress and emotions often exacerbating abusive situations.

Deb Greenwood, head of the Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport, says that the holidays typically see a surge in domestic violence cases.

"For some folks it may not be a joyous time; they may be going through a situation that is involving domestic violence, perhaps there is an arrest in their family -- so being able to be an ear and to listen to someone if they're saying they need help, they need being a friend, they need support; so, it could be just as small as doing that, taking someone out for a cup of tea or coffee."

According to Greenwood, one in four women and one in seven men are impacted by domestic violence.

The Center for Family Justice offers free and confidential services to those affected by domestic violence.
