Preservationists are fighting to save a Bridgeport church that is set to be demolished.

The historic St. Joseph's Church was built in 1923 on Madison Avenue.

Preservationist Robert Holstead says he has been keeping an eye on the future of the church for quite some time. He says he recently noticed advertisements in the paper from the Connecticut Housing Partnership, formerly "The Mutual Housing Association," for the building.

"It's got a nice foundation, it's got a lot of embedded energy in these old buildings. Environmentally, it's more environmentally responsible to keep an old building rather than to knock it down -- all this that was quarried out of the earth in the 1920s," Holstead said.

He adds that he wants Mayor Joe Ganim to step in and give public notice of any demolition so residents can offer solutions to keep the church standing.
