Welcome back to New Jersey Power Politics. I'm Eric Lanz Krenner. Vote 2024 is in the rear view and it's full seem to head towards vote 2025. Specifically, the race for governor here in New Jersey and the field is stacked with political heavyweights on the democratic side. Jersey City mayor Stephen Phillip, former Senate President, Steve Sweeney Newark, mayor Ras Baraka, former Montclair mayor Sean Spiller, congressman, Josh Gottheimer and Congresswoman Mikey. She now for the Republicans, eight candidates including state Senator John Bren. So Jack Chattel, former New Jersey State Senator Ed Durr and radio host, Bill Spadea. But joining me right now in studio is one of the newest entrants into the race. Congressman, Josh Gottheimer, gubernatorial candidate, Josh Gottheimer. It's good to see you. Thanks for having me, man. All right. So, listen, you, you heard me rattle off the name of candidates. There's a lot of people in this race. How do you stand apart and who do you find to be? Perhaps? And I don't know if this is a fair question most formidable in the field. Well, listen, I'm, I'm running and, and completely clear as the lower taxes lower cost governor as the problem solver, who's got a long record of getting things done, uh, things that people said are impossible to get done. And listen, we got big challenges in Jersey as, you know, amazing state. But we've lost 300,000 people over the last couple of years. Fourth most expensive state in the country and what we heard both in this last election and what I've heard since I first ran in 2016, it just keeps getting louder is that we got to make life more affordable for people, right? And, and that is what I'm focused on and uh listen, it's a great, it's a lot of great people running and uh and we share a lot of the same values for a lot with a lot of my colleagues on the democratic side. But, you know, listen, I'm, I'm the one running as the lower taxes, lower cost governor. Uh I, I do wanna talk more about platform in a moment but uh Mayor Phillips said this week, actually, I believe it was right after you announced probably in between you and Congresswoman Cheryl. Uh primaries are healthy. But how do you keep a primary with such well known names yourself included from turning into a grudge match or, you know, something that's bruising that actually eats away at support rather than invigorating the voter base because I think you gotta talk to people about the issues, right? I mean, this is not about, people aren't focused on the fight between each other. What they're focused on is how you gonna make their lives better. Right. And whether you get their, what do you need to get their health care costs down the utility bills, down their housing, more affordable, their childcare, more affordable. I think that's what people want. They wanna know. Are you just gonna, who can get it done for me and for my family? And, uh, you know, I, I think I have a very long record of, of, of fighting when we need to fight and solving problems to get things done and, and, um, I'm gonna keep doing that to make sure we make Jersey better for them and, and that's what I talk to them about. I was just, uh, mentioned to you, I did a, I'm in the middle of a 21 county diner tour. So I did four counties this morning diners all across southern Jersey talking to folks, right? And, and what I hear clearly is what are you gonna do to help me pay the bills? Right? Because just things our taxes are too high here. What do you do to try to get these costs down for me? And that's what I'm gonna focus on throughout this race or perhaps what are you going to do to prevent additional tolls and taxes? You've been one of the fiercest, most vocal critics of congestion pricing. Of course, congestion pricing. 2.0 approved by uh the MT A just this week. Congestion tax, congestion tax. Yes, you threatened what Governor Murphy referred to as the nuclear option. Can you just explain to the viewers what that entails? Sure. So listen, we, we've had this great Cooper relationship in New York for 100 plus years. The port authority, which is a great organization, right? We, we manage the, manages the roads, the bridges, the tunnels all around New York, the port, the airports, right? And, and in that relationship, when go over the GW bridge or through the Lincoln or Holland tunnels and go to New York, right? We, we work on those things to get projects together. We share the revenue together. New York turns around as you know, a couple of years ago says, hey, we got this idea. We're such a mess over here and how we run our mass transit system. We lost $700 million last year to people, fare skippers, people who ride and don't even pay 50 percent of people who ride MT A buses in New York don't pay, right. So we, we need more money. How are we gonna do that? Oh, let's stick it to hard working families, those electricians, the nurses, let's stick it to those guys in Jersey and make them pay. So when they come into the city, not only will it cost money to go over the bridge, but let's hit him with another nine bucks a day to come, to come into New York City. And when I, I think it's completely outrageous. That's not the way we've had this Cooper relationship. And what I believe is, listen, if we're gonna have this great cooper relationship because 20% of the economy of our country runs through the northeast, through this corridor. If we're gonna have this great relationship, you can't turn around and then whack our, our families just when they, they go through the tunnel and then go into New York and hit him with another tax. And so what I said is like, if that's the way you're gonna do it, then we're gonna have to play ball differently. I'm not gonna keep having people in Jersey fund, laguardia and JFK and all their stuff if they won't do anything for us. So, in essence, you would be advocating for freezing the minutes of the port authority. Basically, both sides. Both governors have to say, ok, we'll, we'll go ahead and pay the bills this week, uh, right for the, for the next week. So we'll keep going for next week. And what I would say is like, let's, let's pause that. Hey, you know, hey New York, why don't we rethink this congestion tax? You wanna charge somebody else that, listen, you wanna do what you wanna do with other states. That's your choice. But for Jersey, for hard working Jer folks, you can't whack us with another $9 a day that's $2300 a year. And then they want to charge surge pricing, they want to raise it to 15 bucks in the next couple of years. They've already agreed to raise it before it's even started. That is not a way you take care of cops and firefighters and teachers and nurses and, and right, and electricians and people who are working hard to make ends meet, we gotta get costs down. We got to get taxes down. Let's talk about property taxes because I don't remember any gubernatorial candidate in recent history, probably for the past several decades who hasn't made lowering property tax as a priority? How can you do that in front and center? Right. And, and what would you do that? Your prede any of the, the current governor or his predecessors haven't done? I don't think we've really focused on this in years and, and really said, like, look, listen, this is gonna be the priority, the thing and between taking on certain bureaucracy, which we have, we have a lot of, a lot of things that I think we, a lot of red tape, we can get out of the way, but really the way you're going to do it is with growth. You gotta get more good paying jobs in Jersey. We lost 300,000 people in the last couple of years. Fourth most expensive state in the country, highest business taxes, highest property taxes in the country, you can't draw jobs here. If you're gonna keep, you know, if you're gonna say to people, we're gonna charge you so much. We gotta get good paying jobs. We get good, more good paying jobs. They should be here. We got a great state. Right. Amazing between beaches and the smartest people around and great schools and, and lakes and right. Springsteen and, and pizza. We got the best, but the way we get them here, we got to actually make it more affordable for them to be here and for people who work at those companies more affordable for them. We do that, we grow it. That's how you get more tax revenue and to pay for things that I know so much of us care about. Get those costs down. We gotta make housing more affordable, but you need more to be able to actually to be able to handle this more affordable stuff for starter housing and, and for seniors, right. I mean, we've got to make this all more affordable or we're gonna keep losing people. Congressman Josh Guner. We have to leave it there. Thanks so much. It was great to see you. Thanks for having me. Welcome back to power politics. I'm Eric Lz Krenner, a former aide to Jersey City mayor and gubernatorial candidate, Steven Phillip is suing for wrongful termination, retaliation and discrimination. Jonathan Gomez Noriega was terminated back in August for campaigning for and donating money to his sister who had posted inflammatory comments while running for Secretary of State in Missouri Phillips said that the issue is that Gomez has supported his sister while serving on the Jersey City LGBT Q task force. The mayor said that he tried to help Gomez instructing him to separate himself from his sister's controversial comments. However, Gomez kept his allegiance to his sister. Phillip's office responded to this lawsuit saying in part, quote, this lawsuit has no merit. We wish him luck in his next chapter. Republican lawmakers are calling on Governor Murphy to pull the plug on New Jersey's planned electric vehicle mandate. This after Connecticut, Governor Ned Lamont did just that following President elect Donald Trump's victory news 12 New Jersey's Jim Murdoch with reaction. I definitely enjoy my Tesla a lot. Um I do own gas cars as well. I got my federal tax rebate. I have unlimited lifetime charging on my car. I love it. And it's the best thing ev owners love their cars. But when it comes to a forced mandate, I think people should just be able to buy whatever they want. But I definitely see, um, a lot of the cars moving more towards electric vehicles in the future. I don't believe in the mandate. Absolutely not these two owns, want a choice, not a forced decision. New Jersey Republicans like assembly woman Vicky Flynn agree in the next year. In his final year, he should really take a closer look at this and may enroll back these mandates. Flynn says, factors like the higher cost on working families, availability of charging stations and a soon to be radically different federal administration makes it clear a pause on the mandate is needed. There's no evidence in the marketplace in the infrastructure that we are ready to meet those mandates. February Rutgers Eagleton poll found that only half of New Jersey in support of the governor's plan to phase out gas vehicles by the year 2035. Those against say there's just too many questions left to be answered, but now they go ahead and force everybody to get E DS. What happens to the gas tax when they're not filling up over here? Where does that money go? You follow if it makes sense from an economic point of view in New Jersey, I bet you New Jerseyans will, but that's not where we are at Jim Murdoch news 12 New Jersey.
