A Bronx parent and advocate is calling for action on a maternal health bill she says is long overdue in Albany. Desseray Wright, an advocate with The Bronx Defenders, said the proposed Maternal Health Dignity and Consent Act would help protect pregnant patients from medical practices performed without their knowledge.
In a sit-down interview with News 12, Wright shared her own experience, saying she was drug tested during pregnancy without her consent. The bill is currently awaiting movement in Albany.
Meanwhile, city leaders are advancing efforts to address New York City’s housing crisis. A proposal before the City Council would give nonprofit organizations the first opportunity to purchase distressed multifamily buildings before they hit the open market. Supporters say the measure could help preserve affordable housing and prevent displacement.
News 12’s Heather Fordham spoke with Brooklyn Councilmember Sandy Nurse, who sponsors the bill. Nurse said the policy aims to keep housing in community hands and stabilize neighborhoods facing rising costs.
At the same time, Mayor Mamdani is rolling out an ambitious housing plan that calls for the construction of 400,000 affordable homes over the next decade.
