Newark Liberty International Airport has announced a major overhaul project.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that major changes are coming, including the expansion of Terminal A and a brand-new Terminal B.
Officials say that 49 million people traveled through the airport in 2023 – the highest volume ever. But there is a strain on land and in the air as passengers are met with congested roadways, dated infrastructure and regular delays.
“We’re going to unleash the potential, the raw potential that the Port Authority has been building up for 103 years,” says Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole.
The new Terminal A opened last year, and officials say it was only the first step in the redevelopment.
“We want to continue building upon that to not only make this a world-class facility building off the past success but make sure it’s representative of the state it resides,” says Jacquelene McCarthy, the Port Authority’s director of Aviation Redevelopment.
The future airport will see AirTrain improvements, more room in Terminal A and a replacement of Terminal B. There could also eventually be expanded parking, updated roadways and a new Terminal C.
“What this plan does is lay out for everyone to see where we are going,” says Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton.
The Port Authority said the planning process for the major elements will take two to three years. There’s no timeline available yet on when to expect the work to be completed.
