Following a lengthy investigation and nearly one year later, Stamford police have announced an arrest in 2023 homicide.
Police say around 3:30 a.m. Christmas Day, officers responded to Stamford Hospital for a report that a person had been stabbed and was being treated in the emergency room.
Juan David Hernandez-Velasco, 32, underwent surgery but died that day from his injuries.
An investigation found that Hernandez-Velasco was stabbed during a fight outside of a home on Crystal Street.
Police discovered that Hernandez-Velasco had been stabbed by Juan Camilo Avila-Olmos.
Shortly after the incident, Juan Camilo Avila-Olmos left Connecticut and moved to Los Angeles.
He was taken into custody by Los Angeles Police without incident Saturday.
Avila-Olmos is being held as a fugitive from justice under an arrest warrant from Stamford police.
Avila-Olmos' bond is set at $5 million.
He is currently undergoing the extradition process, police say.
