A man is still on the loose, accused of robbing an East Rockaway antique store of more than $25,000 worth of jewelry in broad daylight.
"I've been working around here for what, over 25 years already, and I've never heard anything like that," Anna Nunez, who works in East Rockaway, said.
Nassau County police said the suspect walked into Antique Buyers of LI, INC. at 87 Main St. just minutes after the business opened around 9:13 a.m. Tuesday.
The suspect demanded an employee hand over a brown leather briefcase that contained assorted jewelry valued at more than $25,000, detectives said. Nassau County police said the employee handed over the briefcase and the suspect ran from the store.
No one was injured, and police have not detailed what the suspect used or said to force the employee to hand over the valuables.
The business lists itself as "appointment only," but it's unclear if the suspect made an appointment as part of the scheme or was just able to walk in.
"I've never seen the door open ever," East Rockaway resident Gary Stehr said. "I live around the corner; I walk past here every day. I've never seen any activity here ever."
Nassau County police describe the man they're looking for as white, with a medium build, 6 feet tall, 60 years old, wearing a black sweatshirt, blue jeans, a yellow/white baseball cap and black glasses.
News 12 reached out to the business multiple times today for comment but has not yet heard back.
Detectives are asking that anyone with information call the Nassau County Police Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS or 911.
