When New Canaan police arrived at 12 Gerdes Road Friday night, they found the homeowner, 55-year-old Laura Williams dead on the ground outside, her skull cracked open and a hammer nearby, according to police reports released Tuesday.
The reports said officers also found Williams’ 20-year-old son, Sebastian Van Stockum, in the home.
“Van Stockum had blood smeared on his face, and a large amount of blood spatter on his T-shirt, pants and the palms of his hand,” the reports said.
"I did it," Van Stockum is quoted as saying to police. "I took my mom's life," adding, "I tried using a knife, I tried using a hammer and I used my fists."
According to the reports, Van Stockum was initially calm, then broke down crying, saying, “I was a problem ever since I was born. I don’t have time to take any pressure off me. I want all the pressure. I want to be crushed.”
The reports also said he told an officer he was not mentally well and later, refused to give his name, stating, "I don't deserve to be named. I do deserve to be forgotten."
Police first responded to the area just after 10:20 p.m. after a report from a passerby of a man yelling "Mama" from the woods at the corner of Gerdes Road and South Avenue while officers were enroute, police said Van Stockum called 911 and confessed to killing his mom.
The dispatcher’s report said he stated, "I want to turn myself in," then started crying and said, "I just killed my mom, and I don't know why I did it."
The report went on to say that when the dispatcher asked if Van Stockum had any weapons on him, he answered he didn't, except his "mental health."
Van Stockum was also quoted as saying he wanted to be shot and that, “I wish I was she here. I wish I didn’t do what I did.”
"I'm a terrible person. She was on to something," the report said Van Stockum told the dispatcher. "I know where I'm going when I die."
Van Stockum was charged with murder and arraigned Monday in Stamford Superior Court, where State’s Attorney Paul Ferencek called the crime “especially violent.”
“The victim was found bludgeoned to death at the scene, extreme trauma to the skull,” Ferencek told the court.
According to the now-public police reports, officers on scene located a crime scene in the kitchen with “overturned furniture, blood stains and miscellaneous items strewn about.” The reports also said police found blood on a door, leading police to believe Williams “may have run out the back door prior to collapsing near the driveway.”
Police said they are not releasing any additional information about the case, which includes answering questions about if they’d previously been called to the home Van Stockum lived in with his mom. The dispatcher’s report said Van Stockum’s phone number was associated with a prior case, but the New Canaan High School grad has no criminal history.
“This was a terrible shock,” said attorney Phil Russell, who represented Van Stockum at his arraignment. “Nobody anticipated this or foresaw this. And at this point, there's an awful lot of loose ends. All I can say is it would be premature for anyone to rush to judgement. Obviously, it's a tragic situation, and it's a family.”
Van Stockum remains in custody on a $2 million bond. He's due back in court Nov. 3.
