A police car was damaged during a street takeover in Ansonia early Saturday, police say.

Police received multiple reports about a street takeover and fireworks that were shot off at the intersection of Wakelee Avenue and Franklin Street around 12:30 a.m.

An officer found 50 to 100 people in the street with dozens of cars, some which were driving erratically.

Police say one group approached the officer's car and one person jumped on the hood, while the others surrounded it. The officer attempted to back away and hit a parked car.

Once the group got closer, they damaged the vehicle with thrown objects, according to authorities. When additional officers arrived, the crowd left the scene and drove onto Route 8.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police say the investigation into the takeover is ongoing and they have started to identify suspects.
