A 61-year-old man who was critically injured when he was pulled into an MRI machine by his necklace died from his injuries, according to Nassau County police.
The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, Long Island.
Nassau County police say the man entered an MRI room unauthorized while the scan was in progress.
Police say that the man was wearing a large, metallic chain around his neck, which caused him to be drawn into the machine, causing a “medical episode.”
News 12 spoke to Adrienne Jones-McAllister, the wife of Keith McAllister.
"I saw when he walked towards the table, I seen when he turned towards me and saw the machine snatch him around and pull him into the machine," said Jones-McAllister. "He went limp in my arms, and this is still pulsating in my brain."
Adrienne said she'd had an MRI on her knee and needed help getting up. She asked the technician to get her husband to get her off the table.
The technician went to get her husband and allowed him in the room, despite the fact he was wearing his 20-pound chain that Adrienne said he uses for weight training.
She said this was not the first time she and Keith had been to Nassau Open MRI, and he had worn the chain here before.
"That was not the first time that guy has seen that chain. They had a conversation about it before," he said.
Jones-McAllister said he suffered several heart attacks following the incident.
