An Illinois resident accused of stealing $709,000 from a law firm in North Merrick has been charged with grand larceny, according to police.
Detectives say Robert Weathersby emailed the firm pretending to be a known business associate and asked for a change in payment instructions related to an upcoming settlement.
The firm then wired the money to the new destination he requested. They contacted police weeks later when the real client called and stated that he never received the money.
Police say the money had been deposited into Weathersby’s business account. He was arrested and extradited to Nassau County.
