Police have identified the man whose remains were found in a submerged vehicle in Mount Sinai last month as someone who was reported missing over a decade ago.
Robert Long, 62, of Miller Place, had been missing since December 22, 2010, and was found on June 30 of this year.
Long’s remains were located by detectives in a submerged vehicle by police and two volunteer organizations — Explorers With a Mission and Adventures with Purpose.
The volunteer groups used sonar devices near the Cedar Beach boat ramp, where they locared a PT Cruiser in the water.
Divers then located remains in the vehicle and called 911.
When the search resumed the next day, more remains were located. The vehicle was then removed from the water.
