Neighbors are speaking out after multiple people were injured in a shooting in the parking lot of an event space in Verona on Saturday night following a party.
Police say four people were struck during a shootout near Bloomfield Avenue in the parking lot of Palmetto Venues just before 11 p.m. One person remains in critical condition as police work to identify the suspects.
Residents say they feel unsafe after hearing more than 30 gunshots fired in their neighborhood, which includes Verona High School. Police say one man pulled out a gun, which led to three other suspects exchanging gunfire, leaving a 41-year-old man in serious condition at University Hospital.
According to Verona police, the business owners at Palmetto Venues decided to temporarily close the event space. They shared a statement on social media, stating, "It is heartbreaking to see an evening meant for joy overshadowed by violence. Our prayers are with those who were injured and the community of Verona."
On Monday night, the Verona City Council revealed that the business was improperly given a zoning permit by a former employee with the city.
It is giving the business owners 45 days to vacate or appeal. It shared that Palmetto Venues cannot operate during that time unless they address a list of compliance matters.
Verona police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them at
