New Rochelle police are looking for two suspects who pistol-whipped man in his garage and took off with jewelry in the middle of the night.
Police confirmed in a news release Saturday that a 25-year-old resident of a home at the end of Kewanee Road was targeted.
They said the victim arrived home just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday when two armed, masked men pistol-whipped him, stole thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry and fled the scene.
Neighbor Naheed Ansari told News 12 that she recently received an alert on her NextDoor app about some unfamiliar people hanging out in the neighborhood. Then she learned of the attack a few doors down from her home.
"I've been living here for 26 years," she said. "We never had an incident like this. This is very unusual for this neighborhood."
Some residents reported hearing yelling, followed by a car driving off on Sheldrake Place – the street directly behind the home.
Police have been collecting surveillance camera video from neighbors, including Lonnie Jones. Jones said he has his cameras and great neighbors who look out for him, so he does not see much reason for others to be alarmed.
"You can't control everybody," Jones said. "Things are going to happen every now and then, but I'm not too worried. I feel safe here."
The victim was hospitalized and is expected to recover from his injuries. Police call the violent incident an "isolated event." They are currently trying to identify the two suspects.
