Two firefighters from Pleasant Valley are being honored by New York State for their heroic actions during a house fire in October 2024.
Assistant Chief John Cronk and Firefighter Eddie See were named "Firefighters of the Year" at the Firefighter's Association's annual convention.
The recognition came after the two ran into a burning home on the verge of collapse to rescue a mother and her two young children.
More than 1,000 first responders from across the state attended the event Thursday.
Organizers said the main focus of the convention is recruitment.
"Twenty years ago, the volunteer fire service had approximately 120,000 volunteers across the state. We are now down somewhere around 80,000," one official said.
The convention runs through Saturday on Long Island.
