A firefighter in Plainville died Sunday morning from injuries sustained while battling a house fire, Town Manager Michael Paulhus said.
Town officials confirmed Raymond Moreau died after he was taken to New Britain General Hospital.
The fire occurred on Maria Road around 6:30 a.m. Firefighters found heavy fire coming from the home.
Due to Plainville being a volunteer company and because they were shorthanded, firefighters from Bristol and Farmington were called to assist, according to Bristol Deputy Fire Chief Dave Simard.
Most of the fire was under control by the time the other departments arrived.
No one else was injured.
Moreau's death has left the Plainville community in mourning.
"It's tragic...This is a small, close-knit community. This is a volunteer fire company that is very close, and this is devastating for us and this community," Paulhus said.
"They put their lives on the line, and they do it for years...So whenever there's a death like that, it's a death of a hero," said Plainville Police Department Chief Christopher Vanghele.
A family was inside when the fire began and was able to get out safely. However, the fire destroyed their home.
The Red Cross was assisting the impacted family as of Sunday night.
Gov. Ned Lamont has directed that all U.S. and state flags to be lowered to half-staff in Moreau's honor.
A cause of the fire was still not known as of Sunday night.
