A physical therapist in Poughkeepsie is facing charges for allegedly sexually abusing an underage patient in his care.
According to court records obtained by News 12, 50-year-old Artemio Talampas, of Fishkill, inappropriately touched a female child beneath her clothing April 7 while at his business, Hudson Point Physical Therapy.
The business is located in the basement of a building on Cannon Street.
The office was closed when News 12 went there on Wednesday. Talampas’ father-in-law, who didn’t provide his name, briefly addressed the allegations at their home.
“I don’t know what happened. We are just starting that business. He’s a good man,” he says.
City of Poughkeepsie police arrested the physical therapist on Tuesday after a joint investigation with the Child Advocacy Center of Dutchess County. He’s charged with sexual abuse and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17, both misdemeanors. He’s due back in City of Poughkeepsie Court on Friday.
City of Poughkeepsie police say the case against him is ongoing and are asking anyone with information about Talampas to contact them at 845-451-4000.
The New York State Education Department Office of Professions oversees licensing for physical therapists in New York.
"We take all allegations of misconduct against licensed professionals extremely seriously. However, due to confidentiality concerns, we cannot comment on a specific case. By law, individuals accused of professional misconduct are afforded due process rights before the state may take disciplinary action against them," says a representative for NYSED.
According to online records, Talampas posted $5,000 bail after less than an hour in jail.
Talampas' attorney, Lisa Pelosi, says he denies the allegations and has worked in the field of physical therapy for more than 25 years without any complaints.
