The second phase of the cleanup at Bethpage Community Park is underway.
A total 380 thermal wells have been placed into the ground. The devices will run electric current into the soil, heating it to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature, water boils and harmful chemicals known as volatile organic compounds vaporize.
The vaporized chemicals will then be captured by a special vacuum.
Northrop Grumman and the Department of Environmental Conservation are working to contain and clean up the Bethpage ground water plume. As News 12 has reported, Bethpage Community Park is a former Grumman dumping ground. Nearly two dozen chemical-filled barrels were recently found buried there.
Officials say Stage 2 of the cleanup should take about eight months to complete.
