A
petition to immediately get air conditioning in Valhalla schools is gaining traction online.
Over 140 supporters have signed it on Change.org to get cooling units in every district classroom beginning this September.
The movement means a lot for students, who say they spend a lot of time in sweltering spaces.
"There's no air conditioning and we constantly have to move to the cafeteria or the gym because it gets way too hot," said a fifth grader named Juliet.
The petition says the district is discussing a permanent solution that could be presented in 2026.
However, parents, like Shpresa Camaj, say this week's extreme heat is a reminder that administrators have to act now.
"Yes. Absolutely. I actually had them miss school this week, on Monday and Tuesday, because I didn't want to send them out in that heat," Camaj says.
The petition also says the superintendent said cooling units "may be installed in the areas with the greatest need."
Special education instructor Nasir Clarkson is lucky to work in one of those rooms, but says he wants other spaces at his school to be cool, too.
"You know, it doesn't help when the teacher and the kids are really hot, and they're overheated. Nobody can learn in that situation," Clarkson says.
Officials from the district say they're aware of the petition, but say they have no comment about it.
A third grader named Giselle says she's wearing a fan to school to get by.
"It's really hot in the summer at school and I don't want to be so sweaty," Giselle says.
