One police officer was shot and two others were injured during an incident outside an Irvington motel.
The New Jersey State PBA says that the officers were called to the Gallery Holiday Motel – located at 50 Ball St. – for reports of a man with a gun. The PBA says that the suspect shot at the officer when they arrived and that the officer returned fire.
One officer was shot and two others were injured. The PBA did not specify what injuries the officers sustained, but the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says that all officers are expected to recover.
“We thank God tonight that we are not mourning the loss of a hero. In split seconds, everything changed. The officers came under attack, and they responded. We are so thankful they will recover,” PBA president Peter Andreyev wrote in a statement.
Gov. Phil Murphy also commented on the shooting.
“I have been updated on this afternoon’s shooting near a motel in Irvington involving multiple law enforcement officers. We are grateful for all who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe,” Murphy wrote on X.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office also stated that a civilian woman was also treated for injuries but did not provide any further information.
The prosecutor’s office is asking anyone with information about the case to call their tip line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432. All calls will remain confidential, officials say.
