Nassau County officials are warning residents about a donation bin scam.
A clothing donation bin in the Lidl parking lot on Merrick Road in Massapequa was not allowed to be there, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said Friday.
The town carted off the illegal bin - which did not have an organization’s name - after officials held a press conference in front of it.
They warning residents to be careful before they donate. Officials suspect the donated items were being sold and not given to those in need.
Officials said the bin in the supermarket parking lot is not the only illegal one they've seen.
The Town of Oyster Bay supervisor said residents could call 516-624-6200 to find out if a bin in the town is legal or illegal.
He said some things that might mean a bin is not legitimate is when it's shabbily made, have sloppy writing and no legitimate organization's name.
