A popular Bridgeport police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the department investigates his actions, officials told News 12 Tuesday.
The department -- saying it never discusses personnel matters -- offered no details about the investigation into Sgt. Marlin Campo. It was also not clear what Campo is alleged to have done.
Councilwoman Jazmarie Melendez said the administrative action points to the need for more transparency on the part of the police department, saying the Bridgeport Police Commission -- which handles disciplinary actions -- should be more directly accountable to the public.
"What we need is for the Bridgeport Police Commission to be acting as a civilian review board -- which New Haven has and which other municipalities have -- where community members are part of a board and part of a process when moments like this occur, so that they can have more authority to investigate," Melendez said.
Councilman Jorge Cruz said he was sorry to learn that Campo is under investigation.
"My constituents love this guy. That's how good he is. That's how good he comes across to the public -- so it's sad to hear what's going on and I hope and pray that he's alright, that his family's alright. I pray that Police Chief Roderick Porter will get to the bottom of the whole situation," Cruz said.
