Three firefighters have been taken to the hospital and multiple residents were displaced after a fire broke out in Newark Tuesday afternoon.
The fire was on the 200 block of South Orange Avenue and started on the first floor of Papa Pat’s Pizza, according to officials. They say it started around 12 p.m. and spread to the building next door.
The firefighters are being treated for possible smoke inhalation.
Officials say that 33 adults and 16 children had to be relocated due to the fire.
“We started to smell the smoke. I had two babies and we decided to walk out of the building and tell the neighbors,” says resident Porfirio Peralda.
The owner of the building next door says the building’s insurance just ran out.
“I had insurance for 23 years, nothing happened, today on the day the insurance expires, this happens,” says Akram Khalil.
Firefighters needed additional assistance due to the extreme heat outdoors. Temperatures across New Jersey reached the upper-90s on Tuesday.
