One person died in a house fire in Sparta Thursday morning. The fire was inside a home on Sawmill Road around 8:30 a.m.

Sparta police say that the first officers on scene attempted to enter the house but were pushed back by heavy smoke and flames.

There were four people inside at the time of the fire. Three people escaped but one did not and died inside.

The three family members who survived were sent to area hospitals to be checked for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

The victim’s name has not yet been revealed.
