The NYPD is celebrating what they call significant drops in major crimes around New York City, but that is not the case across all categories.
New numbers from police show rape was on the rise in January, with a jump of more than 40% compared to January 2024. That increase is also mirrored in the Bronx and Brooklyn, according to the data. The NYPD says the rise is partially because of a change to the legal definition of rape that allows more cases to be classified as such.
On the same day those numbers were released, the NYPD announced the arrest of Dominique Giles, who is facing six charges for allegedly raping a 5-year-old girl.
Other crime categories, including murders, assaults and crimes in the transit system and public housing, were all down citywide in January, according to the NYPD. Police officials credit these drops to a "zone policing" strategy that deploys officers to known hot spots for crime.
