In a News 12 exclusive, Mayor Eric Adams addressed noise complaints in Woodlawn after large groups gathered to blast music and block the busy roadway.
The NYPD broke up
one of those large meetups on Saturday night along Jerome Avenue between Bainbridge Avenue and East 233rd Street.
Residents said it's been a battle with the car gatherings.
"It's been five years,” said Joanie Bailey, of Woodlawn. “They're finally listening to us."
"It was long overdue, needless to say,” said Brian Andersson, of Woodlawn. “It can't be a one-off. It needs to happen more often."
Mayor Eric Adams sat down exclusively with News 12, one week after he promised the neighborhood he would address the noise complaints.
"We should not have to wait for an operation or for an aggravated resident to address these issues," said Adams.
The NYPD said it confiscated large speakers, seized four cars, arrested three people and issued 24 summonses.
Adams had a message for those wanting to take part in the car meetups.
"If you want to have a drink, we have some of the best nightlife establishments in the city," Adams said.
Adams said the meetups are unacceptable.
He said the area will be a part of routine patrol moving forward.
"It's a local issue, and so you can't get no more local than News 12,” Adams said. “We heard you. We responded, and we're not going to do one-and-done."
"It needs to be taken care of, and finally we're getting news thanks to News 12," Andersson said.
