Police are ramping up the search for the person who painted swastikas outside a Jewish school in Gravesend. The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect behind what they’re calling a hate crime.
The 62nd Precinct posted photos showing the person wearing a black hat and riding a bicycle. In one image, the person appears to be holding a spray paint can.
“I think it’s crazy," said Esther Setton. "They really have no right to do something like that. Absolutely. Ever. Never.”
Police say a security guard discovered the graffiti early Wednesday morning outside Magen David Yeshivah on McDonald Avenue in Gravesend. Setton said she was horrified — her grandchildren attend the school.
“It is crazy," the grandmother said. "It doesn’t make sense."
School staff have since cleaned off the paint and taken down the Israeli flags that had been covering the vandalism.
Both police and school officials have stepped up security and patrols outside the yeshiva. Several private security guards are stationed near the entrance, and the Flatbush Shomrim has set up a mobile command center to monitor the area.
“God willing, they’ll catch them like, quick because hate in any form is never okay,” said Elisheva Marquez.
Marquez, a longtime resident, said she worries about the children, and she feels on edge in her neighborhood.
"For them to have to be subjected to like such hate and stuff, it’s scary," she said.
Two other Jewish institutions were also vandalized Wednesday — Washington Cemetery and a Jewish social services organization. Police have not said whether they believe the incidents are connected.
People in the community say they hope authorities will catch the person responsible soon.
“I would like to see it resolved, rectified and justice done,” said Laurie.
No arrests have been made. The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
