A 4-year-old boy was found unresponsive at a family shelter in East Flatbush and later died at the hospital.
A police source tells News 12 that officers were called to the shelter Thursday morning for a report of possible child abuse. When they arrived, they found the boy unconscious with a bruise on his abdomen.
According to the NYPD, officers gave the child Narcan twice before rushing him to Maimonides Medical Center. Narcan is a medication used to treat overdoses, but police have not confirmed if drugs played a role in the child's death. The official cause has not yet been determined.
Detectives remained at the shelter well into the evening, hours after the 911 call came in around 8 a.m. Police say the boy’s parents are being questioned, but no arrests have been made.
People who live at the shelter say they are shaken by what happened.
"In the morning, I saw a lot of cops. When I came back, it was a full scene, like something out of a movie," one resident said. "There are so many kids here it’s heartbreaking. You come here looking for safety, and then this happens. It reopens old wounds, not just for me, but for everyone."
Women In Need, the organization that runs the shelter, released a statement, saying:
"Win is devastated by the tragic death of this innocent child who came to reside with us in one of our shelters. We are working closely with the NYPD to support their ongoing investigation."
Police say their investigation is ongoing.
