Garlien Jenkins is a 73-year-old correction officer. He's been working in the force since 1979. During his 46 year career, he has never taken a day off.
"I've never missed a day, I've never been late. I come in early... I have fun at work, I enjoy what I'm doing!" said Jenkins.
The Bed-Stuy native said he enjoys working on Riker's Island and making an impact on the detainees.
"I never looked at myself as being 'I'm an officer and you're an inmate.' I always look at... 'I come from the same neighborhood you come from,'" said Jenkins.
Jenkins' uniform has nine blue stripe patches. Each represent five years of service in the Department of Correction.
News 12 crews captured dozens of detainees erupt in cheers as Jenkins entered mess hall.
Those who work close to Jenkins said he inspires the individuals in custody by treating them with compassion and respect.
Jenkins is known as an avid cyclist, winning gold medals for the police Olympics. Jenkins soon earned the nickname "Solid Gold."
News 12 met with NYC Department of Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie. She spoke about Jenkins' character.
"Gold is rare and unique and that's who he is... He's teaching and uplifting everyone. That's hard to find and that's why he's our solid gold," said the commissioner.
News 12 asked "Solid Gold" if he will be hanging up his uniform anytime soon.
"I don't see the end nowhere in sight yet... I'm still going," he says.
