If you’re heading to the beach today, pack your towel—but don’t plan on getting in the water.
For the second straight day, ocean swimming is banned at all New York City beaches due to dangerous conditions from Hurricane Erin. Red flags are up, lifeguards are off duty, and Mayor Eric Adams says parks enforcement officers will be out to make sure no one goes into the water.
City officials say the decision is all about safety. The National Weather Service is warning about strong rip currents and dangerous surf, with waves breaking as high as 9 to 13 feet. They say even strong swimmers could be pulled out to sea.
And it’s not just here in the city—ocean swimming bans are also in effect across Long Island and along the Jersey Shore.
Bottom line: The waves may look tempting, but officials are urging everyone to stay out of the ocean. If you want to cool off, the city’s public pools remain open through Sept. 7.
