The Norwalk community gathered on the Norwalk Green to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month during the city’s annual “Light It Up Blue” event Monday evening.
The event was led by Jeff Spahr, deputy corporation counsel for the City of Norwalk, and featured remarks from Board of Education member Nellie Cole, who shared her experience living on the autism spectrum.
Mayor Barbara Smyth presented a proclamation recognizing Autism Acceptance Month on behalf of the City of Norwalk. Connecticut Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff also attended, bringing a proclamation from Gov. Ned Lamont.
Personal stories included remarks from Norwalk resident Emma Connors, who spoke about growing up on the autism spectrum. The program concluded with a musical performance by Juan Quesada, a student in the Norwalk Next Steps 18-22 Transition Program, who performed The Beatles’ “Let It Be” on the keyboard.
