A new law will soon limit how much landlords in New Jersey can charge for application fees.
The fees will be capped at $50, starting on May 1.
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport says this is to protect residents from excessive fees and tactics that make the housing affordability crisis worse.
"Dishonest landlords who try to evade the fee cap or use application fees to extract excessive charges from tenants violate our laws and will face the consequences," she said in a statement.
