A Norwalk police officer who had been on leave following his arrest for road rage in March retired this week.

On March 9, David Vetare was arrested by state police for a road rage disturbance on the Merritt Parkway in Trumbull.

He was accused of throwing an object at another vehicle and trying to run that vehicle off the road.

Vetare was charged with reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle with the intention to harass or intimidate, reckless endangerment and breach of peace.

Following his arrest, the department started an internal investigation to determine that Vetare violated department rules and regulations.

Police concluded the investigation and found Vetare violated several Norwalk police manual rules of conduct.

Police say Vetare retired Tuesday.

Chief James Walsh released the following the statement Wednesday:

"As I have stated earlier these actions do not define our department as a whole and do not reflect on the men and women of the Norwalk Police Department who serve our citizens. I understand that these events have shaken the trust in our department, which we have worked so hard to build in the past. I reassure the residents of Norwalk that I am committed to transparency, officer accountability, and upholding the highest standards of integrity."
