As brutal cold temperatures settled over Westchester County, the Yonkers YWCA opened its doors to anyone in need of warmth and shelter.
With temperatures dipping below freezing Sunday morning, the organization’s warming station provided a critical refuge from the dangerous conditions outside.
Inside the building, space heaters, cots and a welcoming staff offered immediate relief for people seeking to escape the bitter cold. Those who arrived early in the day were also offered a non-denominational church service, adding a sense of comfort and community during the harsh weather.
Superintendent Thomas Dyer said the YWCA’s mission during extreme cold is simple: help anyone who needs it, no questions asked.
“We don’t know a person’s background or what they may be dealing with,” Dyer said. “If someone is cold and needs a place to warm up before continuing their journey, they’re welcome here.”
The Yonkers YWCA will remain open all day and all night.
