New Jersey’s high school athletic association has narrowly approved a proposal to implement a 35-second shot clock in high school basketball.

Athletic directors from across the state voted 170-166 in favor of the measure, just surpassing the 169 votes needed for approval.

Supporters say the change is overdue. Bergen Catholic coach Billy Armstrong said it is time for New Jersey to adopt a shot clock, noting that many other states already use one.

However, some schools raised concerns about the cost of installing the systems, which can run into the thousands of dollars.

Several states, including neighboring New York, already use a shot clock at the high school level.
