Big hats, bold bites and a classic cocktail are turning homes and local venues into Derby Day destinations on Long Island. At Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel, the celebration is already in full swing, showing just how easy it is to bring the excitement home.
The iconic mint julep is the day of the day! “It’s one of the oldest cocktails on record,” said Robbie Manuello, food and beverage supervisor at Jake's 58 Casino Hotel. “Unlike the horse race, this one is a slow sipper, you want to take your time.”
No Derby party is complete without indulgent, shareable food. From a classic hot brown sandwich layered with turkey, bacon and cheese, to brisket-topped pimento grilled cheese and crackers with dip, the menu brings comforting flavors to the table.
Fashion is part of the fun. “Fascinators have been in for years, and they’re easy to travel with,” said Dalit Bezalel, of Sherel’s Hats. From florals to bold statement pieces, Derby style is all about going big.
