Happening today, NJ Transit is offering a 50% discount on a roundtrip fare for those impacted by the ongoing I-80 shut down in Wharton.

NJ Transit says customers traveling from Hackettstown, Mount Olive, Netcong, Lake Hopatcong, and Mount Arlington will not need to purchase a fare when boarding.

Customers at these stations should inform the train crew if they are transferring at Newark Broad Street Station or Summit Station to continue their trip to Penn Station New York. They will receive a transfer ticket to present to the crew on the connecting train.

For the return trip, customers will only need to purchase a one-way ticket back to one of these five stations, providing a full 50% discount on roundtrip travel.

Over the weekend, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Gov. Phil Murphy and Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. visited the site.

Duffy says the USDOT has brought in national experts in geotechnical engineering to help the NJDOT identify the problem and safely reopen this road.

"it's a massive artery that can't be shut down," said Secretary Duffy . "So everyone is working together, to figure out what solution we need to make sure we can open up this roadway again, and it's an evolving situation, sinkhole 1, sinkhole 2, now we just saw this sinkhole"

Gov. Muphy says two westbound lanes could be open within a week and the eastbound side could be open in 6-8 weeks, all subject to testing.

Officials are saying the central cause is an abandoned mine 200-300 feet beneath the interstate.
