10h agoThe Paterson Police Department will remain under the control of the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General – at least for now.
The state Supreme Court announced that it would hear Attorney General Matt Platkin’s appeal of a lower court ruling that stated there was no legal basis for the state to take over the department.
The state will continue to control the Paterson police operations during the hearing process.
"Any attempt to interfere or obstruct with the outstanding work being done by PPD under our oversight will not be tolerated,” Platkin wrote in a statement.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh responded to the ruling.
"We continue to seek restoration of our rights that have been deprived by the Attorney General. We won in State Appellate Court, and we are confident that we will win in court again,” Sayegh wrote.
The 2023 takeover was prompted by the controversial police shooting of Paterson resident Najee Seabrooks while the man was suffering from a mental health crisis. Many within the community protested the police department’s use of force.
