Imagine going more than a month without heat or hot water right now. That's what some people in Newburgh say they're dealing with, and it could be a while before they get it back. Jackie Gillis has this story. I cried, you know, just cry, cry, cry, you know, because it's so sad that this is really happening to us. Those living at the Kenny apartment complex in Newburgh tell me they've been living without heat and hot water for at least a month, some even longer. It's been going like that now almost a year. Doing everyday normal activities like taking a bath or cooking have been an ongoing struggle. I'm retired now, but I still like to get up and. Take a nice hot bath or a shower just to shower my son sometime or my daughter or just trying to keep them warm on their days where they don't go to daycare. Many tell me they are utilizing space heaters, but it isn't enough. Tenants say they've been trying to get a hold of the property management, the Baum and Kenny Management Group, but they say they never get a response. It's been bad. And I called down there and they don't answer the phone. Councilman at larger Robert Macklemore tells me he's met with several leaders at different levels of government to brainstorm ideas on how to get this fixed immediately. It's a shock value because nobody should be living like this. So my suggestion is that we do call. State of emergency. Uh, I don't want a temporary fix. I want a permanent fix to try and help out. Warming blankets were being passed out to tenants. There will be an emergency town hall this Wednesday at 6:30. I did reach out to the Bob and Kenny Management Group but did not hear back. Mr. Harvey, you lied to the residents of Kenny's apartment. You told us that we had heat and hot water, but you did not tell the truth. The residents of the Kenny apartments continue to make their case for basic living conditions at the Newburgh City Council meeting last night as recent improvements to the complex have not been completed, bringing an apology from Mayor Torrence Harvey. I do owe the residents. An apology and I got a phone call that the heat was pumping and I posted that there's heat in the Kenney apartments, and I do apologize. And today News 12 received a list of 64 code violations reported to city inspectors just in the month of January. The violations include a lack of heat, hot water, mold, and rodents. Mayor Harvey reminded residents that the apartments are not city property, so your landlord. is a slumlord who's gotten you all into this problem. So who is the owner of the Kenny Apartments? Through research with the New York State Division of Corporations, News 12 has tracked Bourne and Kenny Redevelopment LLC to an address in Long Island City and confirmed the company is owned by another LLC, Newfield RE Investors Services, which is In turn run by all county management, all three businesses list the same Long Island City location. Despite repeated attempts, the owners have not responded. City officials say the landlord has until Friday to make repairs. If not, the city could declare an emergency and place a lien on the property. So I'm here for a solution. That's it, and that's all. I just need a solution. Residents of the Kenny apartments in Newburgh are continuing their fight for basic housing conditions. Some tenants now have heat after city inspectors issued multiple citations, but they say there are still issues. Newspoll's Jeremy Hopwood has the story. The heat is back on, at least for some. I actually just got heat yesterday for Gaylord and other residents at the Kenny Apartments in Newburgh. Basic living conditions have been a struggle for years now. After multiple citations were issued by the city in the past 48 hours, the heat has mysteriously started to flow. How do we go one day from not having heat to the next day of having heat when I didn't have heat for since when? October heat is only part of the issue. 3 apartments have been condemned. Once you have raw sewage coming up out of your tubs, it's non-livable because you know you can get really sick from that. This elderly woman who did not want to go on camera for fear of reprisals by the landlord, showed us her radiator. So that's cold to the touch there. Yeah. Another resident is in the same situation I turn on the oven for our apartment to be warm because, you know, my mom's elderly, so I'm not going to let her freeze. And her hot water. Like ice We visited Bourne and Kenny Development, the owners and managers at their listed address. No one was there. Multiple calls and emails to this company by News 12 over the past week have not been returned. While the heat has come back on for some, questions remain about the legality and the decency of Bourne and Kenny Development LLC. Newburgh neighbors are demanding heat and hot water after they say they were left in the cold, and as News Twelve's Jeremy Hopwood reports, those neighbors may be ready to take action of their own. We're here and we stand here as one and we thank everybody. Residents of the Kenny apartments in Newburgh who have been experiencing a lack of heat, hot water, and trash removal gathered tonight to take action against Bourne and Kenny management who have not returned calls from residents for months. The city of Newburgh can see what we're going through. Jamie, who has lived at Kenny for years along with his father, shared videos. Burst pipes, water damage, and mold. It's a lot of water damage. That water hits the electrical box that could start an actual fire. How long has this been going on? I would say now going on a good 2 years. Tamika Stewart, city council member, explained that one of the 2 boilers on site is down. That's the reason why there is insufficient heat and hot water for a lot of the tenants. Keeping your rent and collecting it in escrow puts the burden on the landholder. Do your job, then we'll pay you. As State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson, the Hudson Valley Justice Center, and residents addressed the crowd. Next steps remain unclear. What is clear is that residents have had enough. Speak up.
