Newark police have identified the driver suspected of hitting a protester outside of Delaney Hall with his vehicle.

Newark police say 38-year-old Thomas K. Brown now faces assault charges and was ticketed for reckless driving.

The victim, Alex James, told News 12 that she was protesting outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center on June 21 when she was struck.

“I registered tumbling at the same time I registered being hit,” James said. “I basically handled that, tried to tumble in a way that wouldn’t hurt as much as it might. That’s when I see the side of a red sports car 'vroom' past.”

The incident was caught on camera and widely shared on social media.

James was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Brown was identified as the alleged driver a few days later.

“I commend the diligence of our detectives for quickly identifying this suspect and ensuring that he faces criminal charges for recklessly injuring a peaceful protester,” Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda wrote in a statement. “I am extremely grateful that the victim’s condition is stable and that she rightfully reported the incident to police.”

The Department of Homeland Security told News 12 that Brown was not an ICE employee.
