Newark Mayor Ras Baraka won reelection Tuesday, securing a fourth term as leader of New Jersey’s largest city after defeating seven challengers in a crowded nonpartisan race.
The Associated Press called the race for Baraka shortly after polls closed, marking another major political victory for the longtime mayor.
Baraka’s win comes after a high-profile year that included a run for governor and national attention following his arrest at an immigration protest, with charges later dropped.
Baraka, who was first elected mayor in 2014, campaigned on continuing development, public safety improvements and investment in Newark neighborhoods.
