Community organizers in Newark took to the streets Monday for an anti-violence rally. It comes on the heels of the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Yasin Morrison.
Outside of the home where Yasin was killed is a makeshift memorial of candles and balloons, as well as his favorite toys and snacks.
Community organizers shut down traffic at the intersection of Osborne and Hawthorne in Newark Monday evening, just steps away from where Yasin's life was cut short by a gunman’s stray bullet.
The community is calling for the person who pulled the trigger to do the right thing.
"He might as well turn himself in, cause there’s not going to be a stone unturned to find him", said Newark resident Dawn Haynes Reynolds.
The shooting happened Friday around 5:30 p.m. at 174 Osborne Terrace, where according to police, the child was visiting his grandmother. An adult male was also injured.
The Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery says the number of homicides was down almost 25% in the city between 2023 and 2024. This most recent tragedy is a reminder that there’s still work to be done.
"We want the community to know that we’re going to come know on doors and we’re going to talk to community members because the community knows what happened, who did it, why they did it", said Deputy Mayor for Public Safety LaKeesha Eure.
Police continue to ask anyone with information to contact them. The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
