Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels say the decision to switch to virtual learning for New York City schools will be made Sunday afternoon.
New York City officials made the announcement Friday morning during a weather briefing press conference.
With nearly a foot of snow expected to land Sunday, the mayor says all hands are on deck in snow preparations for the city. Code Blue was enacted to get people into shelters, and communications will be open to brief New Yorkers on the weather conditions.
The mayor said the decision to go to virtual learning will be made Sunday afternoon. Schools Chancellor Samuels added PSAL activities will be canceled Sunday. They also mentioned they have stress-tested the virtual system in preparation.
The mayor added the decision hasn't been made yet due to the range in the forecast and the impact it can have on families. Mamdani also added the school calendar has no flexibility due to additional holidays, and they are bound by state law to have "180 days of instruction."
Head of the MTA Janno Lieber says trains and buses will be in operation this weekend and will update commuters on the status of services. Long buses will be taken out of service for safety.
Mamdani encourages New Yorkers to stay home Sunday, prepare for additional snowfall and keep an eye on the forecast.
