Island are getting ready to roll for this storm. And joining us now to talk about preparations in the town of Islip is the supervisor, Angie Carpenter. Angie, good morning. Thanks for joining us. Here we go again, but this time, even bigger storm than we've seen over the past few. So we had a practice run, uh, a couple of weeks ago, and, uh, but it looks like from everything we're hearing, this is going to be a big one. So we have been preparing. Uh, our salt barns are full. We've got probably 25,000 tons of salt and sand mix, uh, ready to go after the plowing is done. Uh, the crews are ready, the equipment has been checked. I mean, everything that could possibly be done to prepare has been done. So now all we ask is that the public cooperate. Uh, please, please get your cars off the road, pull them in the driveway, put them on the lawn. We don't care where you put them, just keep them out of the road. And also too, last time, uh, there was a storm and I was driving. Actually in one of the trucks and hats off to the people that are using that equipment. It's not easy. In addition to maneuvering a truck the size of those clearing trucks are, you've got to maneuver the plows and make sure you're not hitting a mailbox or the curb. And It's really annoying that I noticed there are so many basketball hoops out in the road. So please, whatever you've got out in the road in front of your house, get it out of the road. Snow is changing lots of people's plans for the weekend, and that includes so many DPW employees who have to treat those roads. That's right. Joining us now to talk about the preparations in the town of Hempstead is the supervisor there, John Ferretti. John, good morning. Thanks for joining us. Talk about the plan here to deal with one of the largest snowfalls we've seen in some time. Good morning, Erin. Good morning, Rich. Yes, so we're expecting significant snowfall anywhere from 8 to 15 inches, and we are ready in the town of Hempstead. All of our trucks are, are gassed up. They have their plows on them. The men and women have been called in. They know what to expect, and we will be out there with a, with a full snow operation for this extended snowfall. We're ready to be. There's salting, then 2 rounds of plowing, and then when that's all done, another round of salting. That's the plan as of now. But as always, we're monitoring all the different forecasts and we'll be ready for anything that hits us. You know, a lot of people don't take the advice and say stay off the road. They think, oh, I'm just one person. I'm just one. How much does that really help when people just stay off the roads and let the workers do their work? Not only stay off the roads, Erin, for their own safety, but if you can have your cars not parked on the roads, try to get them off the roads, put them on the driveways, even if you have to put them on the grass. The town will suspend the rules temporarily so you can park your cars on the grass just to get them off the road so our plows can do their job. Also, constituents and residents will remember. Please do not plow or shovel your snow into the roadway because that, that doubles up the efforts our plows have to do. And please make sure to dig out your fire hydrants and check on any seniors that may live around you. Make sure they're doing OK through the storm. Good point there, John Ferretti. Sure they have what they need. That guy was ready to do it. All right. Every town on Long Island, as you know, preparing for the storm. And joining us now to talk about preps is Oyster Bay town supervisor Joe Saladino. Joe, you know the drill. It's not your first rodeo for sure. What are you guys amping up on right now? Well, we have every one of our 250 vehicles. They're all fueled up. The snow plows are all attached. We've loaded up the salt on all of our spreaders and Now it's just the calm before the storm. We're waiting, but there are many tips that our residents should keep in mind when the snow plowing is happening, we need those cars off the road for an efficient curb to curb cleanup. So if you can park your car in your driveway, in your neighbor's driveway, up on your lawn, all of that is fine. More cars we can get off the roads, the better job we can clean up. And please be patient. We have 720 miles of road. We have all of our employees who have their licenses. They're all out in the snowplows. Quite a few, some 300 of our employees will be out plowing. We have 10,000 tons of, of, uh, salt to go, so we'll be spreading that out, but it's going to take some time. So get the cars off the road. Don't be out driving on Sunday. It will be way too dang. Dangerous. Leave that for the professionals and the snowplows to be out there, but focus on your home as well. If you have basement windows that are leaky, get some duct tape and make sure you put a blanket against it and tape that down because your pipes are in your basement. If you have outdoor spigots, we all have those, shut off the water inside the house and then leave the outdoor spigot open so some warm air can get inside. If you have water that's inside that spigot, it will freeze and split. These are just some of the ideas. Once the snow has stopped and you get out there to shovel, be very careful. Drink lots of water. Take rests in the warm to protect your heart. And remember, please don't, if you're using a snowblower, don't point the shoe toward the street. Point it toward your property, because again, we're trying. To get the snow off the roads and be patient because the plows will push that snow back into the curb line and the apron of your driveway, and that's so frustrating if you've just cleared that driveway out. So we're out there, any issues at all, you can call public safety in the town of Oyster Bay 24 hours a day at 516-677-5757. Otherwise, stay tuned to News 12. They do the best. You. It's all hands on deck for highway crews across the island. And joining us now is the Huntington Town Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino. Andre, thanks for, for being out there already. You are outside. You're ready to go for this storm. We're all set. We have, uh, everything in place. All the salt barns are full. It's all ready to go. All hands on deck. And there's gonna be a lot of work to be done, no doubt about that. Andre, um, talk about the effort that it's gonna take here Sunday and then Monday morning too. So we're, it's gonna be slow and steady. That's the way we're gonna take it, and it's gonna be a lot of hours, um, a lot of people, you know, gonna have to stay off the roads, obviously. We're trying to keep it, uh, We're gonna go nice and easy. We don't wanna burn ourselves out. You know, the men and women at the highway department, we are all townwide. It's all hands on deck. Every department, um, the supervisor, the town board, uh, everybody, they're all just giving us as much resources as we need.
