Gov. Phil Murphy was in Maplewood on Thursday to sign a new pedestrian/cyclist safety bill into law.

The law requires drivers to be tested on how to share the road, the rules to pass and the penalties if ignored. Murphy says the law honors all of those who have lost loved ones in traffic incidents.

“But the sad reality is that at the moment, far too many families have received that terrifying phone call. In the past year alone, more than 690 New Jersey families have lost someone in a traffic crash. One loved one taken, is one loved too many,” the governor said.

The law goes into effect in August.
