Nicole Scherillo has long been a lifeline to Bergen Beach’s stray cats, but now she’s grieving one she couldn’t save.
Motley, a neighborhood stray Scherillo had fed and sheltered for months, was found dead just feet from her home over the weekend.
She says he was struck by a speeding driver on East 69th Street.
“I was calling for him... and then an hour later my mom found him in the street, blood everywhere,” Scherillo said. “He was under a car.”
Around her home, Scherillo has built tiny shelters for the cats who have no other place to go, while providing warmth in the winter and food year-round.
“This block is dangerous,” Scherillo said. “There are kids who play across the street. Every time a ball rolls out, my heart drops. These drivers just fly down.”
News 12 captured some of that speeding on camera Monday.
Scherillo says she’s had enough and is urging the city to install speed bumps or cameras before someone else gets hurt.
Motley may be gone, but Scherillo is still caring for the cats that remain, including a new arrival she’s named Guinness.
In a statement, the NYC Department of Transportation said it is committed to ending reckless driving and is working closely with the NYPD to crack down on speeding.
