With its kennels at full capacity, Bridgeport Animal Control is promoting pet adoption this weekend.

The city is hosting a free event on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in partnership with the Cathy Kangas Foundation for Animals.

"This event is one of our more popular ones," Chief Animal Control Officer Jennifer Merenda says. "It's very successful."

There's no appointment is necessary. Animal experts will walk people through the application process.

All pets will be spayed, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

Officials say the process normally costs around $80, but those fees will be covered by the Cathy Kangas Foundation for Animals.

"A pet really opens your life up," Merenda says. "If you open your life up to them, you'll reap the rewards."

New pets won't head home the same day as adoption. There are some things people need to bring with them when they head to animal control.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING: -Proof of home ownership/notarized letter from landlord. -Any current dogs in the home for a meet-and-greet. -Any children under 13 in the home for a meet-and-greet.
